1,000 bikes impounded during Eid holidays

Despite the large number of bikes impounded only six cases were registered against nine one-wheelers

RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi City Traffic Police (CTP) has impounded more than a 1,000 motorcycles during the three-day Eidul Azha and Independence Day holidays.

Punjab Inspector General (IG) Arif Nawaz had directed Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Faisal Rana, Regional Police Officer (RPO) Ahsan Tufail and Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Muhammad Bin Ashraf to carry out a nondiscriminatory action against one-wheeling and motorcycle racing.

In line with these instructions, the police obtained surety bonds worth Rs2 million from more than 30 mechanics, who alter bikes for one-wheeling, to stop their practice. Moreover, 15 motorcyclists, who have a police record for one-wheeling and street racing, were also apprehended.

Ashraf told The Express Tribune that with the assistance of the regional police, the traffic police launched a crackdown on one-wheelers and street racers during the holidays.

One-Wheeling: Islamabad police haul in over 3,000 bikers   

He added that the police impounded more than a 1,000 motorcycles in the remits of various precincts. Despite the large number of bikes impounded, he said that they had registered just six cases against nine one-wheelers.

Giving details of the operation, Rawal Division SP Akram Niazi said that the police had established as many as 18 pickets on different thoroughfares of the garrison city including Muree Road, owing to which one-wheeling and racing were curbed and no untoward incident occurred in those areas.

However, more than 200 accidents occurred in different areas of the city and over 150 people were brought to the emergency departments of the allied and other hospitals of the city during the Eid holidays. Most of the patients, though, were released after being provided with first aid.
