South Africa’s fast-bowler Dale Steyn has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect. The Cricket South Africa (CSA) twitter account broke the news on Monday.

The fast-bowler, who is regarded as one of the best in the modern era, will be available for limited-overs cricket for South Africa.

Steyn expressed his love for Test cricket while announcing his retirement from the format.

“Today I walk away from a format of the game I love so much. In my opinion Test cricket is the best version of this game. It tests you mentally, physically, emotionally,” he said.

The fast-bowler admitted that his Test retirement was a terrifying prospect however he was adamant that his decision will help prolong his career.

"It’s terrible to consider never playing another Test again but what’s more terrifying is the thought of never playing again at all. So I will be focusing on ODIs and T20s for the rest of my career to maximise my full potential and ensure my longevity in this sport," he said.

Steyn thanked everyone who had supported him throughout his career and was optimistic about his future in the limited-overs format.

“I’d like to thank everyone in cricket, no one specific, because everyone has been a part of my journey. And I look forward to continuing to play for the Proteas in the shorter formats. Thank you," he concluded.
