Citizen injured by police fire passes away

Deceased and police official got into a squabble, the latter opened fire

KARACHI: Bashir Afridi, 22, who was injured when a police official opened fire on him on July 23, 2019 succumbed to his injuries on Friday. The body of the deceased was handed over to the family who has taken the body for burial in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Police arrested the accused police official and sent him to prison. Meanwhile, the Sindh IGP sought a report on the incident from the Malir SSP within 24 hours.

According to Steel Town SHO Shakir Ali, a police official of the Anti-Encroachment Cell, Ali Raza, and the deceased citizen, Afridi, were at Gulshan-e-Hadeed Mor on July 23, 2019 when they got into a quarrel.

The two men, who were at the time on their respective motorcycles, quarrelled over the issue of staring at each other.

Amidst the verbal spat, Raza opened fire on Afridi and left him with bullet injuries on the back and under the ear.

Raza then tried to escape but police managed to arrest him with the help of other citizens.

Injured Bashir was shifted to a private hospital at Stadium Road but could not survive his injuries. He died ten days later on August 2.

The SHO said that Afridi's body was handed over to his family after medico-legal formalities. Police registered a case against Raza on the charges of attempted murder on behalf of the deceased's brother, Shabbir Afridi.

The police changed the FIR to Section 302 [pertaining to murder] of the Pakistan Penal Code after Bashir's death.

The accused police official is a resident of Soomar Goth, National Highway while the deceased was a resident of Gulshan-e-Hadeed.
