LAHORE: A team of senior Jail Department officials briefed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore Director General Saleem Shahzad about facilities provided to inmates and the challenges faced by prison authorities. Shahzad told officers that the bureau had received complaints about prisoners being mistreated when shifted from physical to judicial remand. The officers replied that these reports had surfaced due to the lackadaisical attitude of previous governments about prison reforms. The officers also briefed the director general about the issues related to service structure, shortage of staff and long duty hours. NAB DG Shahzad promised to provide maximum facilities for prisoners and strive towards for more reforms. He also ordered jail officers to ensure the presence of female staff during the meetings of inmates with families. The DG said that the prisoners must be respected and provided 24-hour services such as Rescue 1122, as is the case when they are in NAB custody. A decision was also taken to appoint focal persons to improve coordination between NAB and jail officials.
