World Cup heroics could lead to knighthood for Stokes

England all-rounder Ben Stokes is expected to receive a knighthood after his heroics led to a maiden World Cup title victory on Sunday.

Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt, who are set to replace current Prime Minister Theresa May later this month, were asked about a potential knighthood for England’s World Cup hero during a debate. Both candidates responded positively.

Stokes was adjudged player of the match in the final against New Zealand after his resilient knock of 84 runs guided his side into a super over and an eventual World title victory.

This is England’s maiden World title victory after a wait of 44 years.

 A knighthood is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a sportsperson in the United Kingdom (UK). Stokes could become the twelfth person to receive the honour. Alastair Cook was the last sportsperson to be knighted.
