LAHORE: In the past few months around 32 species of deer were born in Lahore’s Jallo Park, of which the Indian Sambar deer’s population is increasing.

At present, there are around 11 Indian Sambar deer at the recreational facility. Most of the Sambar deer that cross the India-Pakistan border are transferred to Jallo Park, which is adding to the growing population of deer.

Jallo Park Assistant Director Ghulam Rasool said that five deer are male, three are female while three are still babies. He shared that these deer enter Kasur, Lahore and Sialkot in order to save their lives from hunters across the border and to look for better food.

Rasool said that Jallo Park takes care of these deer which is why birth rates are high and so their population is increasing. Two baby deer were born recently, he said. “Animals don’t have any country or any border. Wherever they live they consider it their home, therefore people from India cannot claim to take them back from us. Most of the animals are injured when they reach Pakistan after escaping from the traps of predators.”

He said that the number of other species of deer is also increasing. “The 32 baby deer were all born n the last six months. All the newborns are healthy and have become a source of entertainment for visitors at the park.”

The Jallo Park provides a better environment for the nourishment of the babies because of its vast area and natural environment, he added.
