RAWALPINDI: There has been a sudden apparition of all the ‘ghost’ employees of the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) after the company implemented a biometric attendance system.

However, a number of employees who hailed from far-flung areas, have started submitting their resignations.

RWMC sources said that an employee survey had shown that there were over 150 employees who were receiving their salaries but could not be seen either coming in or going out of the organization.

However, after RWMC Chief Executive Mian Adil Behzad had a biometric attendance system for the attendance of employees installed, all such employees have started reporting to the company regularly.

More importantly, they have suddenly become punctual about attending their duties.

Sources revealed that since these 150 ‘ghosts’ have started turning up for duty, the overall performance of the company has improved.

They further said that improved cleanliness of the city during the ongoing dengue season has thus far saved the city from a major outbreak of the disease. This, sources said, would not have been possible if the entire staff of RWMC was not reporting for their respective duties.

Sources further said that a number of sanitary workers, who were working at the residences of senior officials have also returned to their duties at the RWMC fearing that their continued absence may yield disciplinary action against them.

Furthermore, Behzad has strictly directed employees to focus on improving their performance as it will count along with attendance. The sources added that RWMC teams will also conduct surprise visits to ensure the presence of workers in the field.

He has warned that the supervisor and other related staff would face strict action if the cleanliness of any area was found to be unsatisfactory.

Joint dengue efforts

RWMC Senior Manager Dr Hamid Iqbal has said that the threat of dengue virus can be defeated but only through joint efforts.

He demanded that citizens raise awareness amongst their respective circles regarding the importance of cleanliness for the prevention of dengue. Addressing a seminar regarding the anti-dengue campaign, he said that people should take precautionary measures to protect themselves from the virus.

On the occasion, the speakers appreciated the efforts of RWMC towards making the city cleaner.
