ISLAMABAD: An accountability court on Friday extended the physical remand of Omni Group CEO Abdul Ghani Majeed in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) by seven days in the money laundering and fake bank accounts case.

The accused was presented before the court on the expiry of his physical remand period.

The NAB prosecutor informed the court that the accused owned different companies under the umbrella of the Omni Group.

The court was requested to extend the remand by 14 days for further investigation. However, the defence lawyer opposed the extension in the remand saying that his client had already been asked about his emails and links to the companies and he had responded to the queries.

He added that the extension in the physical remand was not being sought for investigation but to pressure his client.

“NAB first files a reference and then investigates the case,” the defence lawyer told the court.

He said his client had taken a loan from a company and he was being accused of committing a crime.

“If taking a loan is a crime then everyone in the country is a criminal,” he added.

“If a loan was taken from a company and forwarded to another one, how can this be considered a crime?”

The NAB prosecutor argued that the accused had denied links to the company from which he taken a loan. He added that Abduk Ghani also needed to interrogated in the Thatta water supply case.

The court extended the remand by seven days and adjourned the hearing till July 12.
