14 drown as vehicle plunges into River Indus in K-P

Eight bodies have been recovered, six still missing; seven people rescued alive

KOHISTAN: Fourteen people drowned after a vehicle plunged into a river in Kohistan district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) on Sunday.

The four-wheel drive vehicle, carrying 21 people, was heading from Gadar to Palas when it fell into the River Indus. The accident was reported to have occurred in the area of Shalkanabad, just five kilometres away from the Palas police station.

All the passengers were swept away in the river but rescuers managed to pull seven people to safety.

However, officials confirmed the death of 14 people and said eight bodies had been recovered while six were missing.

The deceased and the injured were shifted to Pattan district hospital, while a child was shifted to Battagram district hospital.

Last year, at least five people were killed and six others injured when a passenger jeep fell in Neelum river some 190 kilometers off Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

The tragedy struck when a snow avalanche hit the jeep near Sardari area of Taobat, Neelum valley, and forced it down 700 feet.
