Prisons dept gets Rs4b budget

Rs25m allocated for new Thatta prison

KARACHI: More than Rs4 billion has been allocated to the department of prisons in the financial year 2019-20, including a development budget of Rs.2.291 billion.

Around Rs25 million has been marked for a new high-security prison in Thatta which will have a capacity of 1,000 inmates. Another Rs12.5 million has been marked for the construction of 10 new watchtowers and Rs.57.5 million for staff training. For the construction of visiting rooms at prisons, Rs35 million has been set aside. For 10 new watchtowers in the Malir district jail, Rs.17.5mn has been allocated, while Rs20 million has been marked for the installation of mobile phone jammers at various prisons. For staff training at various prisons, Rs57.53 million has been allocated.

For the construction of a 30,000-gallon water tank in the women and juvenile prison in Karachi, Rs7.5 million has been set aside, for 100 new flats for workers of Hyderabad Rs10 million has been marked.

Karachi Central Jail has gotten a Rs320.99 million budget while the juvenile prison  in Karachi will get Rs70.556 million and the women prison in Karachi will get Rs21.09 million. Malir district jail will have a total budget of Rs160.129 million, Hyderabad Central Jail will have a budget of Rs280.3 million, and Hyderabad women prison will have a Rs20 million budget.

In the financial year 2018-19, only 29 new staff members have been appointed, with the total staff now standing at 6,553.
