MULTAN: There is a need to focus on efficient use of energy for maximum conservation and to curb the power crisis in the country.

This was the crux of the views expressed at a workshop titled Roadmap for Energy Efficiency, organised by the Department of Engineering, the Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), the Punjab Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency (PEECA), Energy Department of Government of Punjab; and Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) on Sunday.

BZU's Department of Electrical Engineering Head Dr Abdul Sattar Malik said that the aim of the one-day workshop was to suggest various means for energy conservation and its efficient use.'

The Punjab Energy Department and BZU are carrying out a joint venture which will not only create awareness about energy efficiency among the masses but also help them reduce their electricity bills, he said.

Efficient use of energy stressed

Pakistan is blessed with abundant natural resources such as coal that can provide the cheapest energy if appropriate means are used for its utilization, he added.

PEECA Programme Manager Abdul Rehman said that several projects launched by the Punjab government were adding thousands of megawatts to the national grid. The government was also seeking help from academics to deal with the energy crisis.

BZU Professor Rehan Shaikh said that the joint venture of government and universities would enable the government to produce maximum renewable energy. "The energy crisis is man-made and it can be ended by adopting efficient means," he said.

A large number of students and teachers attended the workshop.
