MIAN CHANNU: Lawyers lodged a protest against illegal detention of their colleague by a police official in Mian Channu, Express News reported on Sunday.

Reportedly, Saddar Police Station SHO Muhammad Riaz allegedly detained Mian Channu Bar Association Member Ghulam Sarwar Advocate and used abusive language. The lawyer was kept in illegal detention for hours where the cops manhandled him. Later, he was released.

Soon after the incident, the legal fraternity gathered outside assistant commissioner’s katcheri office in protest and shouted slogans against the police.

Speaking on the occasion, Mian Channu Bar Association President Syed Manzoor Hussain said that they demand the authorities to take action against the accused policeman. He added that SHO Riaz should be suspended with immediate effect and initiate legal proceedings against him.

He warned that if the officials concerned failed to fulfill their demands then they would boycott court proceedings in the district on April 15 (today).  The bar president maintained that the legal fraternity will also take out a rally from District Katcheri to T-Chowk. Later, the protesters dispersed peacefully. Earlier, lawyers in Lahore protested against the National Judicial Policy Making Committee’s (NJPMC) decision over the registration of cases under sections 22-A and 22-B of the Criminal Procedure Code (Cr.P.C).

The NJPMC had resolved that applications, under the said sections, might not be entertained by courts unless they were accompanied by a decision of the relevant district superintendent police (SP).

Lawyers boycotted the courts and as a result, several litigants from far flung areas had to return without attending proceedings.

The legal fraternity present at the Lahore High Court bemoaned the decision of the NJPMC, expressing concern that none of the representatives of the bar associations or councils were taken on board when finalising the matter.
