Wildlife officials arrest hunter after shoot-out

The wildlife department officials arrested a hunter after a brief shoot-out in Cholistan area while seven others escaped, Express News has learnt.

Reportedly, District Wildlife Officer Mujahid Kaleem and his team were on routine patrolling in Cholistan when they received information that a group of poachers was involved in illegal hunting of deer in Toba Thori Bund area.

On the tip-off, the wildlife team and security officials of Abu Dhabi Palace situated in the vicinity spotted the hunters and ordered them to surrender.

When the poachers saw the wildlife officials, they opened fire on them and tried to escape. The wildlife team retaliated and during the shoot-out, one of the hunters was taken into custody, while seven others, including Manzoor Bhatti, Ghulam Farid, Abdul Shakoor and Amjad fled the scene. The arrested accused was identified as Haji Tahir, a resident of Liaquatpur.

The security supervisor of Abu Dhabi Palace Ghulam Yasin also suffered bullet injuries during the exchange of fire.

The wildlife teams seized two vehicles, arms and ammunition, hunting items and other material from the spot. The local police have registered a case against the culprits and started hunting for them.

Earlier, wildlife department arrested six hunters for illegal hunting of Chinkara in Cholistan Toba Kandi Wala area, while Rs0.23 million in hunting fees was extracted from them. The arrests were made during the drive held to curb illegal hunting and protect wildlife.

The district wildlife officer received a tip that a hunting party had entered Cholistan and was involved in illegal hunting of Chinkara.

While taking action, officials reached the spot and caught six hunters identified as Sooba Khan, Habibullah, Gul Khan, Murtaza, Muhammad Iqbal and Muhammad Akbar. The team also seized weapons, bullets and hunting equipment from the possession of the accused.
