Sattar initiates a crusade to attain a 'healthier' Karachi

KARACHI: Leading a drive for a cleaner Karachi, MQM Deputy Parliamentary leader Farooq Sattar said that, it is important to keep the environment clean for the overall health of the people.

“The 15-day cleaning campaign named ‘Greener and Healthier’ is aimed to improve the health and hygiene standards”, Sattar told media after commencing the campaign at the Souq Centre.

He further said that Karachi needs a sum of Rs20 billion to remove garbage from the city. He said the amount of garbage produced in the metropolis is around 9-10 thousand tonnes on an average day.

Sattar further said that the city government has now launched a drive from June 16-30 to improve the sanitary conditions and improve the city's environment.

Sindh Environment Minister Sheikh Muhammad Afzal said that the civic departments do not have the capacity to pick up more than 30 per cent of the total waste that is produced in the city. He added that almost six tonnes of waste is not collected every day and 180 tonnes of left-over waste is piled up in the city every month.
