The Lahore High Court (LHC) has summoned Inspector General (IG) Punjab on a petition to conduct a judicial inquiry in the Sahiwal tragedy on January 24, Express News reported.

Chief Justice LHC Justice Sardar Shameem Ahmed Khan summoned the IG on a petition of a local lawyer named Mian Asif.

The petitioner stated that the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) officials opened fire on a vehicle near the Sahiwal bypass, killing four people.

The petitioner maintained that formation of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) will not uncover the complete facts of the incident, citing the example of the Model Town case, adding that "the formation of a JIT did not uncover the complete facts in Model Town case as well, and now another JIT has been constituted to probe the tragedy."

Chief Justice LHC remarked that the chief justice cannot order a judicial inquiry. Adding that a judicial inquiry can only take place on the request of the Punjab government.
