Government account tweets and deletes incorrect Bill Gates quote

Tweet appears to blame poor people for their condition

News Desk January 11, 2019

Government of Pakistan's official Twitter handle tweeted an offensive and incorrectly attributed quote on Friday.

"If you born poor its not your mistake but if you die poor its your mistake."

Tribune Take: Imran Khan and Twitter

The grammatically incorrect quote has been attributed to Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates but it is unclear whether Gates ever made the statement. No record has been found of Gates saying anything to the effect.

The post has since been deleted after Twitter users criticised it for its insensitivity to the realities of cyclical poverty and the government's ignorance  about being responsible for the citizens' well-being and access to decent living standards.
