KARACHI: A medical college student miraculously survived a fall from the fourth floor of her apartment building in a residential neighbourhood of the metropolis on Friday.

Apparently, the 26-year-old second year MMBS student at the Jinnah Sindh Medical University attempted suicide after “behaving oddly” for the past few days, according to her family.

According to witnesses, she jumped off from her apartment on the fourth floor of the building in Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 17 and landed on the roof of a passing auto rickshaw.

However, she miraculously survived the four-storey fall with minor bruises. She got down the rickshaw roof and walked towards her apartment building as a bewildered crowd looked on.

Later, she was shifted to the nearby, Darul Sehat Hospital in an Edhi ambulance.

Safdar Mashwani, SHO Sharae Faisal police station, quoted the girl’s father as saying that they had observed an odd change in her behaviour. “The night before the incident, her behaviour became even stranger and we feared she might hurt herself,” said the father.

On Friday morning, she found the balcony door open and jumped off, he added. “Luckily, the rickshaw was passing at the precise moment and she landed on its roof.”

According to SHO Mashwani, when he asked the girl at the hospital if someone had pushed her off, she said, “It was you who pushed me.” He added that the girl had cognitive issues.

Aurangzeb, an uncle of the girl, who has now been shifted to a psychiatric hospital, said her health had deteriorated over the last few days. The family assumed that she was under a ‘black magic spell’ or ‘possessed by evil spirits’. However, they have decided to wait for the psychiatrists’ assessment to determine the reason for the sudden change in her behaviour.
