Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Monday said disqualified prime minister Nawaz Sharif was sentenced by an accountability court to seven years behind bars for looting public wealth.

"Nawaz Sharif was unable to prove how he ascertained his wealth not only in parliament and before the people of Pakistan but also in a court of law now," he said while speaking to the media in Islamabad.

The federal minister said all those people who are trying to defend the Sharif family should be ashamed of themselves as the "looted money" belonged to the common people.

Earlier in the day, Nawaz was arrested from an accountability court after he was found guilty in the Al-Azizia corruption reference and was sentenced to seven years in prison.
