ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Aviation has summoned a full report on the action taken against the officers of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) involved in money laundering and smuggling.

The development took place on Thursday during a meeting of the Senate panel chaired by Mushahidullah Khan.

The Senate panel was informed that the national carrier officers were involved in money laundering and smuggling upon which PIA Chairman Arshad Malik said that the names of the suspected persons had been sent to the sensitive institutions for scrutiny.

Malik informed the committee that the PIA management was taking strict action to curb money laundering and smuggling and the institutions were constantly monitoring for suspicious activities.

“So far two employees have been identified and departmental action has been taken against them while a joint control room has been set up at airports to prevent money laundering and smuggling,” said the chairman.

Civil Aviation secretary said, “Institutions will keep an eye with the help of CCTV cameras.”

The committee members were briefed about the shifting of the ticket software system from Sabre to Turkish HTIT.

The chairman informed the panel that in the Sabre system, Rs31 million was being paid and the payment was increasing every year. “The system was working for 36 airlines; however, now with the HTIT system the issues are getting resolved,” he added.

Mushahidullah said, “We want to see the PIA progress. We are not sitting here just to criticise PIA. We hope that the serving chairman follows in the footsteps of Noor Khan.”

During the meeting the members expressed reservations over providing tickets on increased prices, saying it appears there is a nexus between the PIA and a private airline.
