PFA launches drive against substandard honey farms

Food regulatory body seals food outlets over substandard operations

The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has carried out a province-wide crackdown against honey production units for inspecting the honey quality and food safety standards. The food safety teams have visited as many as 19 honey units during a special drive on Friday.

Out of 19 units, PFA has penalised 10 honey production units with a heavy fine and served warning notices for improvement to nine food business operators.

PFA Director General Captain (retd) Muhammad Usman said the food safety watchdog has checked two honey units in Lahore, four in Sargodha, one in Faisalabad and remaining in other cities of Punjab. He said PFA’s teams have imposed fine over failure to maintain the hygienic working environment, poor storage system and for using chemical drums. He said the warning notices were issued for bringing improvement.

On the other hand, PFA team sealed Kitchen Cuisine Citrus Restaurant for violating the rules of the PFA Act. Muhammad Usman said that authority has taken stern action on the charges of doing business without medical certificates, over failed to maintain the hygiene working environment, the presence of expired food items and over non-compliance with the PFA’s instructions. He said rusty coffee machine and vessels were being used for the preparation of coffee. He said the PFA would not tolerate the wicked practice of food business operators and strict action would be taken against them as per law.
