KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MPA Faryal Talpur, taking notice of the land grabbing incidents in Larkana, directed the Larkana Commissioner and DIG on Thursday to investigate the matter and provide justice to retired Prof Dr Bhagwant Devi Pathai who has been struggling to save her 100-acre tract of land, allegedly encroached upon by local PPP leaders.

The notice comes in the wake of a news report published in The Express Tribune, which saw strong backlash against the PPP leadership on social media. “Please end this illegal occupation and provide justice to the Hindu couple by retrieving land,” she said.

Party officials told The Express Tribune that Talpur, who is also the president of the PPP’s women’s wing, sought an explanation from the Jatoi family regarding the illegal occupation.

“People like you have defamed our party,” she reprimanded Mashooque Jatoi, the local PPP leader, who has allegedly encroached upon the land.

In his defence, Jatoi said that the land originally belonged to his family and they had sold it to Dr Devi, who had subsequently failed to clear the dues.  “They had given us cheques that later bounced and despite our repeated requests, were unwilling to pay the full amount,” he said.

Dr Devi said, however, that they had already made the full payment and that the land was purchased for a charitable hospital and medical college.

Sources in the PPP said that Talpur also directed the Larkana SSP to provide protection to the elderly doctor and her family.
