Creating bespoke bridal hair and make-up looks that work is no easy feat. No woman, after all, would take kindly to sporting the ‘wrong’ look on her big day. T.Edit spoke to some of the best in the business on trends to watch out for and how they ensure clients look and feel great on their wedding day

What is going to be your signature look for this wedding season?

What I love about make-up is how it’s always changing, how we always get to play with new techniques and find inspiration from artists around the world. I’ve been paying particular attention to Sir John’s make-up on Beyoncé on the OTR2 tour, and the depth he is achieving with very soft colours is blowing my mind. I know he uses a cream packed with powder technique and I have been playing with that recently. The results are insanely saturated! The blacks are super black the golds are super gold. Plus the new Pat McGrath mothership 5 palette is out, so you can expect me dipping into those amazing colours too. I think you can expect to see deeper, denser tones from me; after all, winter calls for a little drama, doesn’t it?

What is the worst client experience you’ve ever had?

Aww, I would say 99.9% are wonderful experiences and those that are harder are just because your wedding is a super stressful time. I can’t recall anything too bad, because I really do love doing make-up but I guess it’s hard when some people find it hard to sit still, understandably. That’s a challenge when you’re drawing a fine line!

What is going to be your signature look for this wedding season?

No big hair. No braids bigger than the bride’s face. I like to keep it classy and simple.

What is the worst client experience you’ve ever had?

Honestly,  all my brides have been super chill and I love them all. Except this one time I went to do a bride at a hotel and she got late and I was waiting in the lobby and then later left my favourite sunglasses on the lobby sofa and never found them again.

What’s important are the aesthetics and overall look including the jewellery, outfit and the make-up. If the jewellery and ensemble are heavy as per today’s trend, make-up should be kept wedding-classic (full coverage foundation, pinky nude lipstick, pop of blush, defined brows), the eyes should be the playground. When it comes to the hairstyle, a sleek bun covered with a bunch of flowers just put the whole ethereal bridal look together. But still, it depends on the bride’s choice. As a make-up artist, I love to give my brides a trendy look.

What is the worst client experience you’ve ever had?

I can’t say it’s the worst, but a learning experience. It was with a bride who was suggested a bridal look in her demo meeting according to her features and complexion but she insisted on her desired look with different eye shades and lip colour. I always try to give the bride her desired look but as a make-up artist it’s also my professional responsibility to suggest a change in the desired look if something will not suit her as per my experience. Every bride has different features and as a make-up artist I always try to explore a bride’s beauty by enhancing or diminishing some of the features. But since the bride is always right at Hifsa Khan Salon & Studio, I made her look the way she wanted. But in the end, the bridal look was not up to the mark as I was expecting. The bride herself did not like it and as I did not want to spoil her big day, I asked her to wash her face and I had to redo her make-up from scratch. However, it was not easy to do that as many other brides were in queue but all my effort and time became fruitful when she was very happy and satisfied with her second look which I did as per my recommendations.

What is going to be your signature look for this wedding season?

My signature look this season is going to be a combination of glamourous glitters versus retro pinks and peaches with hints of nudes either on the eyes or lips. The focus will be on the bride’s ultimate baraat or valima looks that suit her face. The hair is soft and tousled yet sleek! We have diverse looks to suit everyone’s wishlist to be a typical classy Amina Raja bride! This season is all about being bold and glam transformations! My focus is on their experience as my bride as much as their looks this season so I have double the work!

What is the worst client experience you’ve ever had?

Brides are always happy, some nervous, some eccentric so at the end of the day we leave those stories behind! As such, no particular worst client experience worth mentioning.

What is going to be your signature look for this wedding season?

There are multiple key factors involved in determining the perfect hair and make-up look for a bride. The first and foremost being what the bride has already envisioned for herself and her big day. Followed by aligning the clothes, jewellery, features, and so forth – that complete look, all coming together, making her the belle of the ball. I find that I don’t like to limit myself to a particular look. For me, each client brings with them their vision and distinctive input which feeds my inspiration, to create something that makes them look their best.

What is the worst client experience you’ve ever had?

People tend to ask me this question often, and every time I’m asked, I’m at a loss for words.  Sometimes there can be a difference of opinion, especially with it being an emotional time for any bride, but I’ve found there’s always a solution with open communication which can satisfy both myself and the client. Maybe I’ve always been lucky enough to have had lovely clients, or it’s the fact that I feel so grateful for the abundance of love and respect that I have gotten, that it over shadows any small hindrances that have left me holding onto any bad experience – but I can’t recall any such experience that left a mark.
