Liquor case: Court summons Memon’s medical reports

Hearing of petition demanding refund of Rs4m surety adjourned by SHC

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) deferred a petition seeking return of the surety money deposited by Sharjeel Memon in the Rs5.76 billion corruption reference on Tuesday.

Memon's counsel Faiz Ali Shah had filed a petition that stated that Memon was in jail after his interim bail was rejected by the court and hence demanded the refund of Rs4 million deposited as surety by the former provincial minister. The case was heard by a two-member bench headed by Justice Iqbal Kalhoro. The hearing was, however, adjourned due to the absence of Memon's counsel.

Meanwhile, a district court issued notice to the public prosecutor asking him to submit medical reports of Sharjeel Memon on a petition seeking exemption from personal appearance in the liquor case due to health issues. The hearing was held on Tuesday in the District South Judicial Magistrate's court where the petition was presented citing Memon's blood pressure, back pain and other ailments.

"I was admitted to the hospital on the advice of the medical board," the petition quoted Memon as saying. The court expressed suspicion over the petition and doubted his statement regarding his medical condition. The court demanded all medical reports of the suspect in the next hearing.
