KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) rejected on Monday the bail plea of renowned builders Rauf Rufi and Manzor Rufi, who stand accused of fraud. A two-member bench headed by Justice Kalhoro heard the appeal. On the cancelation of the interim bail by the SHC, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested the suspects.

According to NAB, the suspects were accused of fraud with the public. Money was collected from people to build 291 houses but they were never provided. Reference of public fraud and deceit has been filed against both the suspects.

Disqualification petition

The SHC for the fourth time issued a notice to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf MNA Faisal Vawda for October 11 in the petition seeking his disqualification. A two-member bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, heard the case.

The petitioner, Qadir Khan Mandokhel, argued that the electoral record of Vawda should be taken into custody as there was a possibility of tampering. Mandokhel said that the MNA did not qualify for Article 62 of the Constitution. He stated that while Vawda had shown in his affidavit that the properties he owned in UK, Dubai and Malaysia were under debt, no bank account was revealed. Furthermore, no money trail was provided for the properties, nor was there any mention of foreign property in the records of the returning officer (RO). Also, Vawda, who owns property worth billions, paid no taxes in 2015, said the petitioner.

The RO had rejected the request against Vawda on the grounds that he had given up dual nationality. However, there is no record of him surrendering his American nationality. The court has summoned documents related to renouncing the dual nationality.
