Street crimes in Karachi

Letter September 15, 2018
One reason for rising crimes is the population explosion and the resultant unemployment

KARACHI: Once again street crime has raised its ugly head in Karachi after months of hybernation. Now once again people feel threatened by Hell’s Angels, that is, motorcycle gangs. People are being robbed of their valuables both during the day and at night. Criminals are roaming the streets in search of targets. A seven-year-old child was killed in an exchange of fire between robbers and the police.

According to the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee’s recent report, an increase in cases of mugging has been recorded. Criminal activities are reported to have grown like a disease in Karachi threatening the life and property of people. The law-enforcement agencies should take decisive action to uproot criminal activities.

One reason for rising crimes is the population explosion and the resultant unemployment. In the absence of jobs unemployed youth take to crime. It is an old adage that poverty breeds crime. So eliminating crimes needs a holistic approach.
