Twitter Alert: Shock and awe at Captain Boom Boom's retirement

Pakistani tweeters react to Afridi announcing his retirement.

With the news about Pakistani cricket heartthrob breaking on the television, the local Twitterati reacted to news as per their own individual level of liking of Captain Boom Boom.

The commentary ranged from offering an eulogy on the cricketer's career, calling for Ijaz Butt’s head, even a PTI dharna against the ad hoc chairman. Most of them were supportive of Afridi.

He is just an entertainer with the bat and he has done a number of blunders in the situations where his team needed him badly to stay at the wicket.Secondly,he must abide by the rules and regulations. He has announced retirement to get sympathies of people and he wants to cash his popularity.I think PCB should continue with Misbah alongwith Hafeez(vice captain).Hafeez should be groomed to lead Pakistan for the next WC,

Rashid Lateef was right all along and we never used to take him seriously. Punjab Cricket Board has evolved into a monster like the 5water establishment.

He is definitely not Imran neither Javaid miandad, but he is the one who created his own style which is known as boom boom to the world, anyways Pakistan losto ne more star, hope we wil be able to make our house in order one day for everything, May Allah save Pakistan and its cricket.

Safi | 13 years ago | Reply All those who dare to think against afridi should keep in mind that he was the one who created a chance for this distraught nation to escape into utopia. He had a great presence on the field and was perhaps the only MEGASTAR left in this Pakistani outfit! I have always loved this man as he unlike others always gives his hundred percent rather than indulging in match fixing etc. My best wishes for him. I hope he comes back to international cricket soon and I believe if he continues to play for four to six years he can easily rewrite the record for taking most wickets in ODIs!!!! Much love AFRIDIIIIIIIIII :'(

He was defensive in the field, he could never instill confidence in fellow players (it was crazy the way he was openly criticising fellow players), he made a hash of manging his own innings (probably the only cricketer who crossed 6000 with an average of around 20). He will be remembered as a captain who said: "Do as I say, not as I do." At the same time, I feel he should have been part of the team as a bowler first, especially in 20/20s. But he needs to act less childish!

However, I can definitely see how it looks quite fishy. 1) The animosity between the PCB and Afridi prior to squad announcement for Ireland series 2) Shahid Afridi removed as skipper. 3) Shahid Afridi states he wants to be with his father as they go to America. 4) A week later he's on a plane to play with Hampshire 5) Now, he's stated that he has had enough of the PCB and is retiring. All of this just doesn't look good for him. One can easily suggest he has used his father's illness as a reason to not play.
