I just got very lucky with my first audition: Alia Bhatt on nepotism

Just when we thought that the hullabaloo surrounding the subject had died down, the actor is back at it again

The whole nepotism debacle started with an episode of Koffee with Karan which featured Kangana Ranaut and then somehow turned into one of the biggest debates in Bollywood. The controversy then trickled down to other parts of the globe and here we are, in a world full of people who now know what nepotism exactly is.

Just when we all thought that the hullabaloo surrounding the subject had died down, actor Alia Bhatt is back at it again. The Student of the Year star hasn't been criticised as much as some of her co-stars have.

Recently, for some reason, Alia was asked about the nepotism issue, reported Pinkvilla. Surprisingly, the actor was quick with her response. "Of late, I have realised that there is no need to defend the nepotistic nature of the industry because it does exist," she said.

"The reason why it has become an emotional debate is because it is difficult for those who don’t get a chance. If I was on the other side, I would be heartbroken too. I may have felt the same way. Yes, it does exist everywhere but this is the only business where there’s no fixed funda."

The Raazi actor explained how it is important for people to be in the right place at the right time. "For instance, if you want to be a doctor, you study, give your examination and get a job. In the film business, you can do whatever you want but there has to be that X-factor that people talk about. There are so many people who come from nowhere and make it big purely on the basis of their presence and what they bring to the screen."

Was Alia Bhatt behind Ranbir Kapoor’s last break up?

Alia added, "An XYZ person can be very good looking and some other can be marginally good looking, but the latter can be a bigger star or loved more because of their talent. There are no hard and fast rules as such, so I totally get the emotional upheaval. As far as I am concerned, I won’t even say that I was more prepared because I was so and so’s daughter. I just got very lucky with my first try (Student of the Year), but you can only get lucky with that first chance. After that only bhagwaan bachaye (God will save us)."

Alia's beau and co-actor Ranbir Kapoor, also believes that nepotism exists in the industry. Son of veteran actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor, the Saawariya actor says that he is a “disarming product” of it.

When asked earlier whether he think nepotism exists within Bollywood, the Tamasha star said, "Of course it exists. I’m sitting here because of nepotism."

He added, "I have a simple take on nepotism: I believe that my great-grandfather worked hard to give his children a platform, and so on and so forth,” he stated. “I became an actor because of my family, and because I got the opportunity."
