RAHIM YAR KHAN: At least two more people died at Rahim Yar Khan’s Sheikh Zayed Hospital after being infected with gastroenteritis during the past 24 hours. Besides these, 12 more gastro patients are being treated at the hospital.

Gastro-related deaths have increased as the government has failed to devise a comprehensive strategy to counter the disease and provide treatment to the patients.

Hospital sources told Express News that two patients identified as eight-year-old Asma Bibi and 60-year-old Riaz Bibi were admitted to the health facility in critical condition. They said the victims were provided treatment but were unable to survive.

Meanwhile, those being treated at the hospital included three-year-old Areeba Bibi, 10-year-old Noor Muhammad, three-year-old Saeed Ahmed, nine-month-old Muhammad Abdullah, 21-year-old Kausar Rubab, 46-year-old Rauf Khan, 50-year-old Muhammad Bakhsh and others.

Earlier, while speaking to Express News, Sheikh Zayed Hospital and College Principal Professor Mubarak Ali Chaudhry said most patients complained of diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. He added that an infection in the gut results in gastroentiritis. “This causes inflammation in the stomach and the intestines and the patient may also experience symptoms such as vomiting, severe abdominal cramps, and diarrhea,” he maintained.
