PML-N’s Pervez Ali Malik steps in for Maryam after court verdict

The party man was previously to contest from NA-133 but will now be contesting for NA-127

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League’s Lahore wing president Pervez Ali Malik is all set to step up and contest elections from the constituency Maryam Nawaz was to contest from before she was disqualified by the accountability court on Friday.

Malik was previously to contest from NA-133 but will now be contesting for NA-127. His wife Shaista Pervez would now contest the elections for NA-133. The Maliks now have three NA seats. The Malik family and the Khokhar brothers gain traction as seats within their families increase.

Nawaz, Maryam decide to return for accountability court hearing

The party ticket for the provincial assembly seat of PP-173 will be given to Irfan Shafi Khokhar, nephew of Malik Afzal and Malik Saif Khokhar. Both brothers now have two NA and two provincial seats under their belt.

Malik will contest the election with the symbol of a television and Irfan opted for the cricket kit symbol. Other Khokhar brothers are contesting from NA-136, NA-135 and PP-161 respectively.

Yesterday, in a verdict which will echo across the political landscape of Pakistan for decades, the accountability court hearing the Avenfield reference sentenced deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif to 10-years imprisonment and daughter Maryam to seven years.

According to Section 15 of the National Accountability ordinance, both Maryam and Safdar cannot contest the upcoming general elections and have been deemed ineligible. Nawaz’s counsel, Khawaja Haris and Maryam’s counsel Amjad Pervaiz were both present.

The former prime minister’s son-in-law, Safdar, was also sentenced to a year in prison. Nawaz was further fined eight million pound sterling and Maryam was slapped with a two million pound fine. The court also ordered their properties to be forfeited in favour of the federal government. Maryam’s sentence includes a year in prison due to her involvement in the Calibri font scandal.
