Arif Nizami elected CPNE president

Express Group’s Ayaz Khan also voted Punjab VP

KARACHI: Chief Editor of daily Pakistan Today Arif Nizami has been elected as President of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) while Editor of Roznama Khabrain Imtinan Shahid was elected Senior Vice President and Chief Editor of Roznama Awami Awaz Dr Jabbar Khattak as Secretary General.

In its annual elections, the council elected Group Editor of Roznama Express Ayaz Khan as Vice President (Punjab), Chief Editor Monthly Defence Journal Ikram Sehgal as Vice President (Sindh), Chief Editor Roznama Taqat Rehmat Ali Razi as Vice President (Islamabad), Chief Editor Roznama Ittehad Tahir Farooq as Vice President (K-P), Editor Roznama Balochistan Express Arif Siddique Baloch as Vice President (Balochistan). Chief Editor Monthly Kiran Group Amir Mehmood as Joint Secretary, Editor Roznama Aman Hamid Hussain Abidi as Finance Secretary and Roznama Ummat’s Managing Editor Adnan Malik as Information Secretary.

The office-bearers were elected during a meeting of the newly-elected standing committee of the CPNE which was presided over by the outgoing CPNE president, Zia Shahid.

CPNE concerned by overdue govt payments

The newly-elected president of the CPNE Arif Nizami praised the outgoing office-bearers of the council including Zia Shahid and Aijazul Haq and said that the CPNE served the media very well under their wise leadership. He said he and his newly-elected standing committee would take up serious challenges against the media so that it could be freed, and freedom of the press could be maintained against all kinds of political, state and economic pressures.

The annual meeting reviewed the situation of media and journalists in the country and took several important decisions. Many resolutions were also passed on the occasion. The CPNE says it will issue details of these resolutions today (Sunday).

Meanwhile, Governor Sindh Muhammad Zubair congratulated the newly-elected office bearers of the CPNE and members of the standing committee, and hosted a reception in their honour at the Governor House.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, federal Information Minister Mariam Aurangzeb, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, PML-N President and Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo, K-P Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak and Chairman Pak Sarzameen Party Mustafa Kamal also congratulated Arif Nizami, the newly-elected CPNE president, and other office-bearers.
