A 21-year-old Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi student with a history of sexual abuse allegedly committed suicide on Friday, Times of India reported.

Police said the MSc student left a note shedding light on how he had been depressed over being sexually abused since childhood. The letter, penned in Bengali, featured some names too.

Officials said the student's roommate alerted police after finding his body hanging from a ceiling fan in their hostel room. The body was handed over to the family of the deceased following an autopsy.

The Hooghly resident joined the institute two months earlier. The deceased had completed an undergraduate degree from a famous Kolkata varsity before enrolling at IIT.

His brother told police he earlier attempted suicide on April 10 by swallowing sleeping pills. He said he had counselled the deceased over two days after he was discharged from Safdarjung Hospital. He said he had dropped him at the hostel on Thursday.
