LAHORE: The city development authorities have decided to make Khayaban-e Firdousi and Khayaban-e-Jinnah a signal-free corridor at an estimated cost of Rs809 million.

The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has been awarded a contract for construction of a 600-meter-long flyover at Shaukat Khanum Chowk and protected u-turns to eliminate the need for traffic signals.

A senior official of the project's contracting company told The Express Tribune that construction of the flyover is already underway. After creating alternate routes and diversions, the company has already completed 40 piles out of a total 60. Eight girders out of total 20 have been built and the work is being done on the fast track. Once the project is completed, it will provide signal-free access from Johar Town and adjoining areas to Raiwind Road, he added.

Responding to a question, he said that development works were initiated on March 22 and the LDA had given a three-month deadline for completion of the project. "The government has directed us to complete flyover and protected u-turns by May 15 as general elections are around the corner.

Following the footprints of city developers, Lahore Defence Housing Authority (DHA) has also initiated a project in which Defence Main Boulevard is being made signal free from Defence More to Lalik Jan Chowk.
