ISLAMABAD:

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar categorically stated that the attribution of using the word 'faryadi' (complainant) by the media for the incumbent prime minister is completely wrong and malicious.

“The Chief Justice holds the prime minister in high esteem, being the head of the government, and has never used the word faryadi for him,” the clarification from the Supreme Court read, “any misgivings in this regard should, therefore, be put to rest.”

Earlier, addressing the media inside the accountability court in Islamabad, Nawaz Sharif said that Abbasi can clarify about his meeting with the CJP if he deems it to be appropriate. He added that PM Abbasi had neither discussed anything with him before the meeting nor was he briefed about it afterwards. Sharif said that he would soon meet with PM Abbasi. “Such remarks should not have been made,” he said when asked about CJP’s alleged remarks.

Nawaz Sharif said that he has always tried to remain in his limits and added that the institutions need to respect each other and that he had never interfered in the affairs of others while he was in power.

“Even when Justice Azmat Saeed remarked that Nawaz Sharif needs to know that there is a lot of space in Adiala jail, I remained silent,” Sharif said and added that it is not befitting of a judge to pass such remarks.

“It’s not just about me. No prime minister would appreciate such remarks,” Sharif said and added that everyone should think about “synchronisation,” referring to a question about the reasons of differences between him and the political parties, establishment and others develop after a certain period during his most recent tenure as prime minister.

He also asked why everyone in the country completes their tenures except prime ministers and added that there are some who even take extensions after completing their tenures.

“How many PMs have completed their tenure, how many assemblies completed the term? Who does this to a parliament,” he asked, adding that all the institutions should take notice of these things on their own. “This practice is wrong,” he said.

Nawaz maintained that his yesterday’s statement about Wajid Zia’s cross-examination has vindicated his stance. “We should open the suitcases brought to the court and see what’s inside them,” he said while looking at the three steel trunks, two suitcases, a couple of bags and folders Zia brings in the court while recording his statement in the Panama Papers trial against the Sharif family.

Maryam Nawaz, who was sitting next to him, said that the trunks, suitcases, bags and folders were full of the material that Sharif family had provided during the Panama case proceedings before the Supreme Court.

With regards to PM Abbasi’s meeting with the CJP, Sharif said that his narrative has been derived from the constitution and the law and it has not suffered any setback.

He also deflected a question about Chaudhry Nisar.
