Educating our protectors

It’s time the police not only in Punjab but also in other provinces underwent lessons in civility

LAHORE: A police sub-inspector was recently caught on tape throwing a little girl in Dheera Sandha village from a stationary motorbike onto the ground. The action was taken following a raid on the girl’s house. The incident shows the violent treatment meted out to ordinary citizens by policemen in the country.

Our so-called protectors are certainly not trained to perform their job well. The sub-inspector threw the minor girl so hard that she has been admitted to hospital and is under trauma.

While it is good that the district police officer suspended the sub-inspector under question, it is significant that such incidents are stopped from occurring all together. And the only way this could be done is by training police staff on people management. It is understandable that the police need to have a strong and tough attitude but that doesn’t mean they compromise on their moral behaviour. Even if a minor is guilty of a crime, throwing the innocent child around is just unacceptable. Neither is throwing an adult who is not a convict.

It’s time the police not only in Punjab but also in other provinces underwent lessons in civility. This will help them in the future.
