Punjab government is keen on promoting kitchen gardening and importance of home-grown vegetables

The Punjab agriculture department sold 50,000 summer vegetable seed kits on subsidised rates across the province, officials said on Monday. The government is keen on promoting kitchen gardening and creating awareness about the importance and the utility of home-grown vegetables, the officials added. Kitchen gardening has gained popularity among people, especially women in different districts, including Sialkot where they are regularly contacting the department to obtain guidance, the officials revealed.

Under the programme 1,300 seed kits were sold in Sialkot, 1,000 in Narowal, 1,000 in Gujrat, 1,300 in Gujranwala and 1,000 in Mandi Bahauddin districts on subsidised rates. This step was taken to motivate people to adopt kitchen gardening. Furthermore, the department will also hold training programmes in schools, colleges, universities and vocational training centres, sources said. The programme will pay special attention to expanding the sphere of kitchen gardening to semi-urban and rural areas.
