Pakistan fears sharp rise in terrorism

Pakistan may face a sharp rise in terrorism cases in the wake of the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

LAHORE: Intelligence agencies have warned that Pakistan may face a sharp rise in terrorism cases in the wake of the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

The National Crisis Management Cell of the interior ministry issued the warning to the police and law enforcement agencies after receiving credible intelligence that militants may plan ‘revenge’ attacks in Pakistan, targeting US diplomatic missions and Americans in the country, in addition to important civilian and military government installations.

Law enforcement agencies have been put on an elevated state of alert and told to be vigilant against any threats. Intelligence officials say that prominent politicians, civil servants and military officials may also be under threat.

Intelligence agencies have warned US diplomats and other Americans in the country to limit their movements and not go anywhere without informing law enforcement officials. Police and paramilitary troop presence has been stepped up at the US embassy in Islamabad as well as US consulates across the country. The arrangements have been made for an indefinite period of time.

vasan | 13 years ago | Reply Pakistanis and muslims are like mud and clay. Everybody moulds them to whatever they want. It was jinnah first, Ziaulhaq next. USA and Saudi had their share of pot making. Unless you have a rational mind to think and plan what is good for the nation, nothing much will change in Pakistan. Now the population is too preoccupied with safety and daytoday struggling.

The Arabs are so called fair weathered friends who claim to be our Muslim brothers are the petri dished of extreme violent terrorist and have pushed out the Wahhabi leaning monsters to neighboring countries while they employ cheap labor to built their decadent high rises and trample on the rights of their citizens. The sad part is Pakistan has not had the backbone to deal with the situation. Instead the recent flawed discipline is to blame everyone. The recent turn of events make the world examine the future of what a great country we could have been and where we lost our footing and how we as as citizens can get it back....can we? Right now the future looks terrible.

Stephen Jones | 13 years ago | Reply @Sidra Khan: I remember reading an interview with a westerner who had converted to Islam and has lived in the Swat valley since the 1960s (he travelled there as a hippy and never went home) To him things started to change in your country when the Arabs came to Pakistan to fight the Soviets. It is these Arabs who brought violent radicalism with them (and influenced your countrymen) who are responsible for your countrys' plight.

Mostly its just us commoners who get hit but the wave of terrorism! the most incompetent government till date and the whole mess started back in the 70's when General Zia-ul Haq agreed to help US in order to oust Russians from Afghanistan!
