PTI chief says US blaming Pakistan for its own failures in Afghanistan

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, on Wednesday, strongly criticised the country’s past leadership for becoming a US ally; he stated that in their double game, they [the US] first created ‘jihadi groups’ and now, decades later, they are waging a war to eliminate them as ‘terrorists’.

Expressing his views on Twitter, he said he had opposed the decision of becoming a part of the ‘US-led so-called war on terror’ from day one.

“Now, after suffering 70k dead, over $100 bn loss to economy, when we had nothing to do with 9/11, constant " do more" US taunts & after nation has been humiliated by Trump, GoP saying the same,” said the PTI chief.

He said there was a lesson to be learnt from the whole episode that the nation should not be allowed to be used by others for ‘short term paltry financial benefits ever again’.

“Our society became radicalised and polarised as we helped CIA create jihadi groups; then, a decade later, we tried to eliminate them as terrorists on US orders,” he added.

Despite being used by the US authorities for their own gains, the country was being blamed for US failures in Afghanistan by an “ignorant and ungrateful Donald Trump,” he remarked.

Khan said the US was making the country scapegoat for its own failures in Afghanistan.

A day after Trump said that the US ‘foolishly’ gave aid to ‘deceitful Pakistan’ that provided safe havens to ‘terrorists’, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, on Tuesday, said that the US was withholding $255 million in aid from Pakistan because of its failure to cooperate fully in America’s fight against terrorism.

Pakistan's civilian and military leadership unanimously denounced Trump's scathing remarks against the country, but refrained from taking any decision in haste, saying the country will remain committed for a peaceful solution to the Afghanistan issue.
