DI KHAN: Sugarcane growers continued protest demonstrations against the management of local sugar mills on Friday for the stalemate over buying price which has delayed the start of the crushing season. A number of sugarcane growers from various parts of the district held protest demonstrations and blocked the Chasma-Dera road. Led by Haroon Awan and Malik Abdul Razik, protestors demanded the provincial government to direct the mills’ management to fix the price at Rs180 per 40 kilograms of sugar. They also complained that the district administration has been using delaying tactics as no serious action against the ‘forces’ that are exploiting poor farmers. Awan alleged that mills’ owners had malafide intentions in delaying the crushing season as they wanted to force farmers to sell their cash crop at a throwaway price.
