Battling lawlessness: Mohmand jirga promises support to govt

At least 300 tribal elders held a jirga in the Baizai and Safi tehsils of the Mohmand tribal district.

ISLAMABAD: At least 300 tribal elders held a jirga in the Baizai and Safi tehsils of the Mohmand tribal district and pledged their support for the government in maintaining law and order in their areas. A local radio station quoted Voice of America as reporting that the jirga decided to expel any person who supports the Taliban in their area. Violators would be punished with a fine of Rs300,000 and their houses would be razed to the ground, in accordance with tribal customs. Government officials have been actively encouraging such tribal councils to take action against militants in their areas.
