Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Inam Memon's health suddenly "deteriorated" at Karachi's Central Jail on Thursday, prompting a medical checkup.

According to jail superintendent Hasan Sehto, the former information minister has severe back pain and fever, saying doctors had been sought to attend to him, Express News reported.

The minister is accused of involvement in Rs5.76 billion government advertisements graft scam.

Sharjeel Memon lambasts NAB in Sindh Assembly

Earlier this month, the PPP leader lashed out at the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for its ‘bias’, saying NAB officials did not enter Islamabad airport to arrest deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar but came to the airport's runway to arrest him despite the fact that he was on bail.

Memon, after returning from months-long self-imposed exile in Dubai, was arrested by NAB officials last month after playing hide and seek for over six hours in and outside the SHC, which had cancelled his interim pre-arrest bail and ordered the anti-graft watchdog to arrest him, along with 11 co-accused.

He kept sitting inside the court premises as his lawyer exhausted all legal options to save him from being arrested.
