Culling isn’t the solution

100 cases of dog-bites are reported at Jinnah hospital daily

KARACHI: Despite the massive culling of stray dogs by the city government in Karachi, over 100 cases of dog-bites are reported at Jinnah hospital daily, according to a news report. Stray dogs, in developed countries are neutered and put in shelter homes, however in Pakistan the authorities order culling them while patients continue to seek treatments in hospitals against dog-bites and rabies. As culling isn’t the solution to the problem, the government must develop shelter homes for stray animals and not leave the task for private or non-governmental animal rights groups or lobbyists. Further, like the polio vaccination, vaccination against rabies or similar animal-borne diseases must be made compulsory for all.
