Nawaz’s disqualification

Letter July 30, 2017
Disqualifying a sitting prime minister on a technicality like that makes one feel quite ambivalent

LAHORE: Although I do not deny the corruption charges levelled against the outgoing government, I am confused about how I should feel regarding the grounds for Sharif’s dismissal. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, the public is polarised about how fair the actual disqualification was, on the basis of the evidence thus provided. The "sadiq and amin" clause is invoked is in point 13 of the Supreme Court ruling and that is the basis for ousting him. Disqualifying a sitting prime minister on a technicality like that makes one feel quite ambivalent. Perhaps they should have simply waited for NAB to conclude on corruption charges. It would have been more convincing for cynical analysts like me.
