KARACHI: The oldest golf club of Pakistan, the Karachi Golf Club (KGC), has begun its hunt for young talent in one of the fastest growing sports in the country.

Golf, considered an elite sport, is fast gaining popularity among youngsters.

Pakistan has been struggling to make its presence felt internationally but still has more than 12,000 active golfers and as many as 53 golf clubs in the country, with more golf courses being added in various cities every year.

All set for Amateur Golf Championship

What Pakistan lacks though are world-class golfers, with not one player in the country being good enough to hold his own against the finest the sport has to offer. What is worse is that the same select few names keep winning the national championships, further highlighting the lack of talent emerging from the ranks.

KGC, in an effort to make better golfers who can compete internationally, have organised a two-week free summer camp for young golfers that started from July 17 and is running till the 27th.

More than 100 boys and girls, some as young as six years old, are attending the summer camp at the KGC. According to KGC COO Commodore Ghazanfar Abbas, the camp will help KGC select the best players for future training.

The participants are being trained by a team of six experienced coaches four days a week. At the end of the cmap, competitions will be conducted from which the top golfer from each age category will be selected. The camp is being staged by the KGC with the support of the Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF) and Sindh Golf Association (SGA).

Commodore Ghazanfar said that the KGC was heartened by the positive response it has received from youngsters. “The kids are very excited. They are getting a feel for it,” he said. “The coaches are instructing them about basics such as posture, stance and grip. They are picking up well.”

He added that 15 promising youngsters from the camp will get playing rights from the KGC, with five being shortlisted from that list to get further training at the club.
