The Islamic College of Brisbane, one of the largest Islamic schools in Queensland, Australia, faced what is being described to the police as a hate crime by the institution itself.

A backpack embossed with a swastika on it was left at the front gate of the school building, containing a pig’s head.

The staff at the school was appalled as they discovered the bag and the rotting meat inside of it at 6:30am on Wednesday, only hours before the gates opened up for the students and more than a 1,000 students were to pass through, some of whom were as young as five.

Police were informed and were provided with CCTV footage that allegedly showed two men leaving the bag half hour before it was discovered, in a Subaru WRX.

A police spokesperson informed that the incident was under investigation after the officers were called in at the school when the bag was discovered.

A spokesman for the Islamic council of Queensland, Ali Kadri, said it was the type of "hate crime" that sprang from the "demonisation of [Islamic] schools". He further added to his statement that silencing such issues is not the solution and that it is crucial to inform the public that there is extremism out there, to the extent that people are willing to get up at six in the morning to carry out such crimes.

Commenting on the incident, Yassmin Abdel-Magied, a former student of the school tweeted out a series of pictures to convey the disgust she felt regarding the incident.

The Islamic college of Brisbane falls under the category of schools owned by the Sydney-based Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, which has been scrutinized under some news outlets in recent years over financial governance and government funding arrangements in recent years.
