ISLAMABAD:

The annual “Spring Flowers, Vegetable and Birds Show 2011” at the Rose and Jasmine Garden in Islamabad concluded amid great enthusiasm from the residents of the twin cities. An informal survey by The Express Tribune found that the people at the show found it both unique and affordable, and preferred it over other recreational activities in the twin cities.

Organised by Islamabad Horticultural Society and the Capital Development Authority, the event showcased different species of birds, along with a splendid display of flowers and vegetables.

Naghma, a student, said she “could barely wait” to come to the exhibition ever since she saw it’s advertisements in the papers.

“I have been to the zoo but you don’t get to see so many different kinds of birds and flowers over there,” she said. Her younger brother and sister, running around pointing at different birds, were as excited as her to be there.

Intikhab Khan, a visitor at the exhibition, said, “My son was quite amused after seeing so many different kinds of flowers and birds.”

He appreciated the low cost of entry to the show and said Islamabad offered few chances to entertain families, especially children.

Such exhibitions encourage people to plant flowers and vegetables in their homes, said another visitor, Azmat Karim. “Children read about varieties of flowers and birds in books, but seeing them in real life is a unique experience,” he said, adding that such events should be organised more often.
