LAHORE: The Punjab government is launching a Teachers’ Motivation Survey in selected schools of the province to gauge teachers’ working environment and problems.

The survey will take a month and will end on May 20. The programme has been initiated by the Punjab School Education Department’s (SED) Punjab Education Sector Reform Programme (PESRP). It will be conducted by a consultant firm in selected schools of nine districts of the province. The districts include Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Jhang, Khanewal, Lahore, Pakpattan, Rawalpindi, Sargodha and Sialkot.

The SED has sent a letter to the officials concerned of the selected districts. According to the letter sent to chief executive officers and district monitoring officers, the officials must facilitate the firm tasked with the survey.

Giving details of the survey, the letter stated, “In an effort to increase insights into factors contributing to teacher motivation, the SED is conducting a first-of-its-kind sample based teacher survey to identify teacher’s working environments which contribute to their motivation.” It added that this would help future recommendations for better HR management”.  The letter added that a private firm, Socio Engineering Consultants, had been selected through an open competition process.

“The firm has been tasked to visit pre-selected public schools and conduct a Teacher Motivation Survey. The activity will be conducted from April 20 to May 20, 2017.” The letter said abovementioned CEOs (DEA) and district monitoring officers are requested to facilitate the firm to collect the requisite data and provide necessary administrative support through field formations, where requested.

Meanwhile, the teachers’ union dismissed the initiative as another ploy to divert attention from real problems. Talking to The Express Tribune, Punjab Teachers’ Union (PTU) General Secretary Rana Liaquat said their problems had already been presented on several occasions. He added that the initiative was just another way of diverting attention from real issues.
