Celebrating women workers on Labour Day

Letter May 07, 2017
An NGO celebrating Labour Day with working women in K-P

PESHAWAR: This year for the first time in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), Labour Day was celebrated with working women of the province by an NGO Da Hawwa Lur, which works to improve the political, economic and social conditions of women in the province. The event was held to recognise the struggle and contribution of women in development of the country.

It emphasised on resolving the problems of women workers, especially home-based workers through legislative reforms. The chief guest, Deputy Speaker Assembly, Meher Tajj Roghani shed light on the pro-women legislations passed by the K-P assembly during the last three years.

Through the event, women were informed about anti- sexual harassment legislation and its importance in countering workplace harassment. Maliha Hussain, director of Meher Garh, emphasised on implementing the law and urged the K-P government to appoint an ombudsperson for sexual harassment law in the province.

The home-based women workers in front of the media and women parliamentarians presented their demands, suggestions and recommendations for policy reforms. Their struggle was recognised through Women in Workforce Awards, which were given to those who contributed in bringing home-based workers legislation.

It’s high time we bring all the existing legislation into implementation and create awareness among workers at the grassroot level about their basic labour rights and laws.
