The post of provincial police chief fell vacant after Mushtaq Sukhera retired on April 10. The acting charge was given to Additional IG (Training) Captain (Retd) Usman Khattak, whereas Sukhera was appointed as the CM’s adviser for police IT and reforms.
According to well-placed sources, Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif interviewed four police officers for the post IGP. These included Lahore CCPO Captain (Retd) Amin Wanis, Additional IGP Operations Captain (Retd) Arif Nawaz, Punjab Special Branch Additional IGP Faisal Shahkar and Punjab Highway Patrolling Additional IGP Amjad Saleemi.
Sources further revealed that CCPO Lahore Amin Wanis is a strong candidate for the IGP slot. It was stated that Tariq Masud Yasin, former inspector general of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), might be considered for the post of CCPO Lahore if Amin is elevated. Other potential candidates for the CCPO are DIG Punjab Operations Amir Zulfiqar, Faisalabad RPO Bilal Sadique and Gujranwala CPO Tahir.
