LAHORE: A large number of doctors, carrying placards and banners, staged a demonstration during the inaugural session of 7th Annual Scientific Symposium 2017 at Lahore General Hospital on Tuesday.

“We are holding a token protest during the symposium to push for our demands of revision of central pay structure, job security and safe environment at hospital premises,” Dr Amir Ahmed, a protest participant, told The Express Tribune. After a 30-minute protest, however, the doctors dispersed and attended the conference.

Addressing the symposium, Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) management member Afzaal Bhatti said the PGMI has a distinguished status as well as a unique seat of quality learning in the field of medical research and training.

He said the symposium would help groom junior doctors to become better clinicians in future. Those who excel in their profession, their performance would be acknowledged, he said.

“The PGMI has got tremendous potential to perform and deliver excellent services,” he added.

Bhatti said the Punjab government was pursuing a vigorous policy to improve health facilities in the province and billions of rupees were being spent to provide state-of-the-art health services to the people.

PGMI Principal Prof Dr Ghaisun Nabi Tayyab said the PGMI has produced a large number of renewed specialists.
