BISHKEK: Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan on Tuesday agreed to revive a transit trade pact, signed between Pakistan, China, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in 2004, in a bid to strengthen regional economic cooperation.

Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, who met his Kyrgyz counterpart Almazbek Atambaev following a round of talks, agreed to remove all obstacles for a smooth and effective functioning of the Quadrilateral Traffic in Transit Agreement (QTTA).

Gilani also discussed with his Kyrgyz counterpart ways to exploit the potential of cooperation in trade, infrastructure and communication.

The premier, who arrived in the Kyrgyz capital on a two-day official visit, held formal talks with Prime Minister Atambaev at the Government House, followed by delegation-level talks.

He invited Prime Minister Atambaev to visit Pakistan, which he accepted.

As this is a strategic need, Government of Pakistan (and not PIA) should subsidise these routes for a minimum period of four years. As traffic builds up, subsidies should be removed. I hope someone is reading this!!
